During our time in Utah, we went to small town 2 hours south of Salt Lake City called Fillmore. Matt was asked by Pastor Warneke of Bible Baptist to preach there on a Sunday morning. There was an interesting turn of obedience in this sermon for Matt.

Matt worked hard, like he always does, studying for his sermon in this small-town church. He was up late trying to get it well-prepared. He prayed that, if this was not the message God had for this church, to please let him know and direct his words.

Early early early that morning, at about 3AM, Matt got up to put on our daughter’s beanie hat, because it was a bit chilly in the apartment we were staying in. Matt says that he immediately heard God speak to him and say, “Wear the hat when you preach.” Of course, Matt was unsure of what he heard and questioned whether or not that was of God or if it was from his own mind. So, he asked God and Matt felt that God was truly telling him to wear the hat and was also putting the correct message on his heart for the church.

We all had to get up SUPER early in order to drive the 2 hours to Fillmore because we didn’t want to risk running late. We get there and we see this beautiful tiny red church. We get inside and it’s so cute there, too- very small but very nice.

The church was supposed to start at 10AM. 9:55AM comes and there is NO ONE there. NONE. 9:58AM comes and there is one woman arriving. 10AM comes and a man and 4 kids arrive. 10:02AM and two more kids are DROPPED OFF. And there you have it: A congregation of 3 adults (including me) and 10 kids (including ours). That right there told Matt why God wanted him to wear the beanie hat. It was for the children! It was a message of obedience that God put on his heart to teach and the beanie was for them to remember the message! What better way for them to get the message than for them to see “that Texas preacher with a pink and brown and turquoise striped and spotted beanie on his head?”

We serve an awesome God who knows EXACTLY what He is doing and why. We MUST remember God is in control. He has a plan for everyone everywhere and we should feel privileged to have a part in sharing Him with others!
